The MEDAL Study

The MEDAL trial (MEDications in Acute Low back pain) is a trial to identify which medications best help those with acute back pain and leg pain or sciatica.

Please watch our animation

Background

Low back pain, with or without leg pain or sciatica, is a common problem for UK adults.

It affects many adults at some point in their lives and is a frequent reason for people to see their GP. It is a common reason for taking time off work (leading to around 12 million lost work days per year). Acute back pain (less than 3 months), with or without leg pain or sciatica is helped by a variety of methods including different pain killing medications and exercise. It is not clear which medications, either on their own, or in combination with others, give the best relief from pain. Some people may have long-term symptoms. Preventing long-term back problems is important to keep people healthy, moving and prevent disability.
